Samuel Fausold, Gettysburg College graduate, 1910

Samuel Fausold, Class president, Class orator, Phi Beta Kappa. He was member of KDR, a local social fraternity. Once, he and his brother Charles, ’12, walked home across the Allegheny Mountains, to Lycippus, Pa.. Sam’s feet were so swollen that he had to be gently carried into his home. Laid up for some days, he had to arrive late at college after the Easter break. The college students met him at the train with a horse drawn wagon and paraded him around the Village of Gettysburg, Pa. In 1935, after being appointed first Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, both Gettysburg and Muhlenburg College awarded him honorary doctorates. In that same year, Bruce Bare, Jr., the son of his college roommate, Bruce Bare, received his Gettysburg College diploma, on the same day that "Uncle Sam" received his doctorate from the college. Bruce, Jr. was also Phi Beta Kappa.
