The Fausold Alcove

The John and Samuel Fausold Alcove was dedicated on Saturday, October 21st, 1995, on the third floor of Stapleton Library at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The two paintings in the background, displayed prominently in the Alcove, are:

Hon. John Fausold Public servant whose fifty-five year career, beginning in 1829,
included five terms in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives,
seven terms as Justice of the peace in Westmoreland County and
service as Revenue Commisioner of Indiana, Westmoreland, and
Somerset counties in 1863, Sequestrartor of the Somerset-Mt Pleasant
Turnpike, pioneer in Pennsylvania public education, and active school
board member.
Dr. Samuel Fausold Educator who served as President of Indiana State Teachers College, 1936-39;
Deputy Superintendent of the Pennsylvaina Department of Public Instruction, 1935,
and public school superintendent who developed a widely recognized progressive
system of student independent study known as the "Ambridge Plan."

 

Presenting the portraits, as well as the endowment, was Dr. Martin L. Fausold (center, in photo.) Accepting for the University was Dr. Larry K. Pettit, President of IUP (left, in photo). Dr Larry Kroah, Director of Libraries at the time, welcomed participants and guests to the ceremony (right, in photo.)
