Charles D. Fausold, c. 1940

Patsy Fausold Sheaffer described her uncle thusly: "Uncle Charles…the "favorite" uncle…who could add a touch of gallantry to his contact with an impressionable little girl (or, later, one not so little!). He had an air…debonaire…charming…"special"…surely never more appreciated than when he "gave me away" on August 1, 1946. Fatherly too, he could be, of course, as when he would approach me at the wheel of the family car and gently but solemnly impress upon me that one never drove those New York roads except at 40-an-hous or less! (And I always followed the stipulation!)

Patsy Fausold Sheaffer said this about her Aunt Eleanor: "Aunt Eleanor…also the favorite…who needed no tie-by-blood to present her unique before any of us who had the privilege of knowing her. Her individual kindliness, the way she would send others from her to us with some little remembrance: a pot of ivy or a basket of fruit or a jar of jam…. Or the way she could seek out something for us to carry away from there which she knew, or must have known, we would treasure. How many such momentoes I cherish here in our home now: a wicker rocker, a picture of the Christchild at the age of twelve, the only sterling silver spoons I yet own (these sent me on my first twelve birthdays), a picture of Amsterdam on tile. But the more rich were her gifts of herself that brought into my life an ever-new and fresh stimulus such as could be had in the; the impact of a favorite writer who might speak to some needful part of one’s soul. There are no words to describe the utter joy I have realized in knowing her who has impressed me as the most unique personality I have experience in my lifetime."
