Samuel Fausold, 1920s

Portrait of Samuel Fausold, probably 1920s. He served as school superintendent in Irwin and Ambridge, Pa. He was President of the Westmoreland County Teachers Association, and unsuccessful candidate, Supt. of Schools, Westmoreland County. In the process he made many fine contacts which helped in future professional advancement. By the late 1920s he had five children.

As Superintendent of Ambridge Public Schools Samuel Fausold completely overhauled the school curriculum; and the Ambridge Plan of Instruction was put into operation. It brought national attention to Ambridge and its Supt. of Schools.


Brothers Fausold, Samuel and George

Samuel, Jr. was born in 1914; George McClellan Breege was born in 1916. George was named for his mother’s father who in turn had been named for popular U. S. General George McClellan of Civil War fame. Gen’l McClellan ran for the presidency against Abraham Lincoln in 1964. He was a Democrat.

Martin and Patsy grew up as near twins. (Was Martin a mistake?) Patsy later edited brother Martin"s book, THE PRESIDENCY OF HERBERT C. HOOVER, published in 1985. The book was a runner up for the best book on the American presidency.

Portrait became official when Samuel was Superintendent of Schools, Monessen, Pa., 1930 – 1935. There he continued his Ambridge Plan of Instruction (a progressive plan where students progressed at their own pace.) While in Monessen he became a prime candidate to be Superintendent of Public Instruction, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He did not succeed but then became First Deputy Superintendent.

Samuel Fausold home in Monessen, Pa. on Graham Ave. Many family gatherings took place here. Because of the Great Depression, Edna’s sister Miriam and husband Raymond lived here for awhile. The top two windows, room of the Fausold brothers, is where they peered out at Mrs. Giles undressing in her bedroom just across the dirveway.
