John Fausold

Son of Casper Fasold (spelled variously, meaning barrel holder) arrived in Philadelphia in 1792 with brother Valentine. Casper moved across the Allegheny Mountains to Bedford, Pennsylvania while Valentine stayed east in City of Allentown area. John was born in Bedford in 1808 and died in 1884 in Kecksburg. Philip Freeman Home

Home of Philip Freeman of American Revolutionary War fame, battles of Stony Point, Mommouth, Brandywine, Germantown and with General Washington at Valley Forge. Philip Freeman was grandfather of Samuel Freeman, close friend of John Fausold, and father of Ellen Freeman, wife of John Fausold. Home is now Compass Inn, a museum in Laughlintown, Pennsylvania. Philip Freeman Liquor License

Following his Revolutionary War service, Philip Freeman lived in various places, moving to his newly constructed Inn, Laughlintown, Pa., in 1799. (It stands today as Compass Inn.) Philip’s grandson Samuel was close friend of John Fausold. When Ellen Freeman was born John said I will wait to marry her. They were married in 1858, Ellen dying ten years later following the birth of five children, Youngest son Thomas living only fifteen months.

Only picture of four children together. Martin Luther is fourth from right in top row. Harry is on right of bottom row wearing hat. Mary and Martha are in middle row and wear similar dresses. Mary is to right and Martha third to right of Mary.

Complete farm with Justice of Peace office. John and Ellen Freeman children were raised here, as were children of Harry Fausold, Lucien Clyde, Charles Roy and Vera Josephine.

John Fausold in Elder Years

John was born in 1808 and died in 1884. It was said that an entourage of carriages coming up the Trauger Hill to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church was viewed as far as the eye could see. John Fausold was as conspicuous in death as he was in life.


John Fausold Obituary

His obituary read:

John Fausold, of Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland county, was born in Londonberry township, Bedford, Pennsylvania, on the 28d of December, 1808. He received his education partly in Bedford and partly in Westmoreland County, having removed to his residence in the year 1818. In the year 1828 he became a member of the Lutheran Church and he continued in that Faith. He followed the business of farming up to the year 1848 and was at the same time engaged in stock dealing and droving. He also attended considerably to the settlement of estates, and to much of the public business of his township. In the year 1846 he was first elected Sequestrator of the Somerset and Mount Pleasant Turnpike Road and he held that trust for many years. In 1846 he was first elected to the State Legislature, and he was returned for many years. Mr. Fausold had been placed upon several important committees, and became a very industrious member of the House of Representatives. He was over six feet in height and had a rugged and healthful appearance. He was a firm and consistent Democrat and an able and patriotic legislator.
