Biographical Note
Joan Schrock Phillipi, of Seward, Pennsylvania, was the first of six women coal miners employed in the Robinson Mine #1, which was owned by the Florence Mining Company, to earn her "mining papers." During the first two years with Florence Mining, Ms. Phillipi ran a shuttle car, operated a utility supply car, laid track, and set roof supports. The granting of her mining papers, or certificate of specialized training, allowed her to move on to the advanced position of "belt-person," or conveyor belt operator.

Scope and Content Notes
This collection of her papers consists of Ms. Phillipi's certificates, items from her attendance at the 1979 UMWA Constitutional Convention, and notes and material from women miners' support groups. Also included in this collection are newspaper clippings from 1977 through 1990 relating to coal mining activities in central Pennsylvania, including strikes, market fluctuation and unemployment in the industry.
