Biographical Note

John S. Fisher was born in Ox Hill, PA near Plumville, Indiana County. He graduated from Indiana Normal School in 1886, and at the age of 19 began his teaching career back home at Ox Hill School. While teaching, he began the study of law and was admitted to the Indiana County Bar in 1893. He entered the political arena as the Indiana County Republican Chairman in 1897, and was elected to the State Senate in 1900, where he served for nine years. He went on to win the governor's seat in the 1926 election, serving the state of Pennsylvania for one term. Fisher was active in business and civic affairs in the Indiana area. In 1902 he was named to the Board of Trustees of the Indiana Normal School. Fisher also served as President of the Board of Indiana Hospital, and organized the Savings & Trust of Indiana. Fisher Auditorium on IUP's campus was dedicated to John S. Fisher in 1939, one year before his death.
