Records of the Shakespeare Club
The Shakespeare Club was founded in 1879 at the suggestion of Professor
J.H. Young of Indiana Normal School and has operated continuously since that time. It is
the oldest social and literary organization of Indiana, PA. Several prominent community
leaders maintained a membership in the club in the hopes of facilitating more effective
communication between the community and the school.
The collection, which dates from 1879 to 1992, includes club yearbooks and membership
lists, financial records, meeting minutes and a history of the club that was written by
one of its members. Of particular note are two photograph albums which contain studio
portraits of many notable professors who taught at the Normal School and several community
leaders who were members of the club.
