Records of the Barnes and Tucker Coal Company

The origins of the Barnes and Tucker Coal Company extend back to 1872, when Thomas Barnes and his brother John opened up the Cuba Mine in Central PA. The success of this mine allowed them to open the Derby Mines and Lansachire Mines #1 and #2. Lancashire #3 and #4 Mines followed shortly thereafter.

In 1893, Thomas Barnes entered into a partnership with Mr. C.S. D'Invillers and Mr. Alfred Tucker; the three men created the Anneston Coal Company. Three years later, Thomas Barnes bought D'Invillers' share of the Anneston Coal Company.

Control of the company remained in the hands of the Barnes family until 1970, when ownership was taken over by Alco Standard Corporation. The Barnes family, however, still retains ownership of some of the mines and maintains an office in Ebensburg, PA.

This collection of materials consists of reports, photographs, slides, and payroll ledger books, dating from 1896 through 1970. The bulk of the materials, however, date from the last two decades of control by the Barnes family.
