Southwestern Pennsylvania Heritage Preservation
Commission Records
America's Industrial Heritage Project (AIHP), an innovative cooperative effort involving a
nine-county region in Southwestern PA, was created to preserve the region's industrial and
cultural resources, all of which were important contributors to the industrial, ethnic,
labor and social history of the nation. The goal was for AIHP to use related historic
sites and cultural resources within the nine-county region as a focal point for the
revitalization of the region's economy through the promotion of the region as a tourist
destination.
In 1987, federal legislation was passed to establish the Southwestern
Pennsylvania Heritage Preservation Commission within the Department of the Interior to
oversee the running of the Project. This collection consists of the records of this
commission, and includes project files, meeting minutes and agendas, and correspondence of
the Commission staff.
