Roy E. Furman Collection
Roy E. Furman was born April 16, 1901, in Davidson, Greene County, PA. He
was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1933 and served as the House Speaker
in 1936. Furman served as Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania from January 1955 to 1959
during Governor Leader's adminstration. In 1958, Furman ran for the Democratic nomination
for governor but was defeated by David Lawrence. Furman served on the PA Turnpike
Commission during Governor Lawrence's term. Furman retired to New Cumberland, Cumberland
County and died May 18, 1977 at the age of 76.
The collection contains Furman's papers during his tenure as Lt. Governor. The collection
is grouped into four series: Correspondence, Speeches, the 1958 Campaign for Governor, and
Board of Pardons. The material dates from 1955-1959.
