Agnes Sligh Turnbull Collection
Agnes Sligh Turnbull was born October 14, 1888 in New Alexandria, PA, the
daughter of Alexander and Lucinda McDonnell Sligh. In 1910, Agnes graduated Phi Beta Kappa
from the Indiana Normal School. After graduation, she began teaching high school English
until her marriage to James Lyall Turnbull in 1918.
During the 1920's Agnes began writing short stories. Her most successful work was a novel,
published in 1936, titled The Rolling Years. In 1966 Agnes appeared in Who's
Who In America, and in 1974 IUP conferred upon Mrs. Turnbull an Honorary Doctorate of
Letters. Mrs. Turnbull died in January 1982 at the age of 93.
The collection includes notebooks which are handwritten copies of Turnbull's published
works, some correspondence, and several newspaper clippings.
