Willis E. Pratt Papers
On July 1, 1948, Dr. Willis E. Pratt became the sixteenth President of what
was at that time Indiana State Teachers College. Born in Pittsburgh in 1906, Dr. Pratt
received his Bachelor's degree from Allegheny College in 1927. He received his Master's
degree and his Doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. He began his career at the age
of 23 as an Assistant Superintendent of the Erie County schools. From Erie, Dr. Pratt
moved on to the Presidency of State Teachers College in Mansfield, PA. Although World War
II prompted him to enlist in the Army. Following the end of hostilities, he continued his
work in education as a recognizer of schools in 15 Italian provinces.
His career at Indiana began the day after he returned from the service, when he accepted
the chairmanship of the Department of Education. He continued in this capacity untilhis
appointment to the Presidency in 1948. It was during Dr. Pratt's tenure as President that
the rapid development and evolution of the college into its present status of state
university occurred.
Dr. Pratt's personal effects, including his diplomas, plaques, and special awards that he
received, are included in this collection. Information and memorabilia from his tenure at
ISTC is stored with the President's Office Files, RG 11, Series B.
