What
Is Information Literacy?
"Information literacy is
a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when
information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate,
and use effectively the needed information."

The
Charge to the IUP Information Literacy Taskforce
The creation of
an ad hoc committee to examine information
literacy and bring forward recommendations by
the close of the year has been established.
Using as a reference point, "Information
Literacy Competency Standards for Higher
Education," adopted by the Association of
College and Research Libraries, this task force
will consider how we might assess the current
skills of IUP students, establish a baseline
level of competency for information literacy,
and implement a training program. The study
should take into account all levels of students
(undergraduate and graduate) as well as faculty
and appropriate staff and administrators. More
generally the committee might examine how to
promote awareness of information literacy and
foster commitment to it.
