United Mine Workers of America - District #2 Papers

District #2 of the UMWA was one of the original regional divisions formed when the union was organized in 1890. District #2 was one of the largest and most powerful districts in the union, encompassing most of central Pennsylvania. The prominence of the region's miners in union organizing and strike campaigns have been an integral part of the development and history of District #2.

The collection is divided into twenty-seven series that include the district's early records, correspondence and material of the district presidents, executive files, arbitration case files, election and convention materials, workmen's compensation case files and information on the welfare and retirement fund. A large portion of the collection documents the presidencies of John Brophy (1917-24), James Mark (1927-1952), and John Ghizzoni (1950-1962).
