Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Company Records
The Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Company was organized in 1881 under the
name of the Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal & Iron Company. Originally operating in
the Reynoldsville basin of Central Pennsylvania, R & P gradually acquired
extensive holdings of coal properties in Jefferson, Clearfield, Armstrong, and
Indiana counties. At one point in its one hundred-plus year history, R & P Coal Co. was one of the largest
employers in the area. Today, although still in operation, R & P operates at a
fraction of its former level. (For a complete history of the R & P Coal Co., see R
& P Coal Co., The First One Hundred Years by Eileen Mountjoy Cooper, 1982.)
The R & P Collection is organized into six main series: President's Office Files,
Board of Director Files, Vitro Minerals Corporation Files, Real Estate Transaction Files,
R&P Canada Ltd., and Company Ledgers. This collection features the personal and
professional correspondence and files of several of the company's most prominent
presidents, including B.M. Clark, H.V. Fritchman, and C.J. Potter. Also of note are the
extensive deeds and land acquisition files, which date from 1846 to 1956, and the nearly
eight hundred ledgers which document the early financial history of the company. The
entire collection dates through the late-1980's.
