Sylvester Garrett Labor Collection

Sylvester Garrett worked for over fifty years as a labor lawyer, government official and labor arbitrator. Garrett played a leading role in the development of expeditial arbitration procedures in both the steel industry and postal service. He was elected to membership in the National Academy of Arbitrators in 1951 and served as president of the Academy in 1963. Garrett has held numerous public and private positions throughout his career, including attorney for the National Labor Relations Board (1938-41) and as chairman of U.S. Steel-United Steel Workers of America Board of Arbitrators (1979-1989).

The Garrett Collection contains eight thousand arbitration case fileds as well as books, indexes, speeches, memorabilia, personal and professional correspondence, lecture notes and scrapbooks, All of this material dates from 1930 through 1989.
