The Records of the Workingmen's Educational and
Social Club of St. Michael
The Workingmen's Club was organized in August 1937 in St. Michael, PA.
(Cambria County) The Club provided an area for informal socializing among the members of
the community. Card games, pool, and dances were popular forms of entertainment at the
Club, with music provided by the local bands. A library was assembled by the Club's
Ladies' Auxiliary, and WPA citizenship classes and U.S. naturalization classes were also
held at the Club.
The Club met at the Thomas Llyod Building, which they shared with UMWA Local #3648.
Although it flourished through the 1960's, waning membership forced the Club to disband in
1986.
The collection contains various papers from Local #3648, including check stubs,
checkweighmen wage statements, Berwind-White Coal Co. employee lists and dues. The Club's
meeting minutes and various publications, including American Family Almanac and the Fight
for Socialism, are also part of the collection.
