IUP Library has been a Federal depository library since 1962 and a Pennsylvania depository library since 1972.  As a depository, it houses and makes available publications issued by agencies/departments of the Federal and State governments.

About the Collection

  • U.S. Government Documents - The Federal government collection in the library has been developed to support the university’s curriculum and research needs and the information needs of the general public.  The collection strength falls into: agriculture, business, geography, health care, military, government and politics.  Mainly housed in Stapleton Library, the government document collection consists of various forms of materials including monographs, serials, maps, CD-ROMs, video tapes, and online resources. In addition, the government documents in microforms, including fiches, films and cards, are especially rich in presidential, Congressional and census materials.  Many documents can be located through a search of  PILOT.

  • Pennsylvania State Government Documents - The library’s Pennsylvania government collection consists of publications of state agencies and departments, and the executive and legislative branches. The collection of publications focus on:  public policy issues, statistics, General Assembly journals and documents and etc. Many documents can be located through a search of  PILOT.

  • The United Nations Documents - IUP library has a selective collection of official UN documents dated back to 1945 in printed and microform format.   The documents are cataloged as regular collection and can be found through a search of PILOTThe United Nations Documents Index is shelved at reference section on the first floor:  [INDEX] JX1977 .U19

  • Foreign Government Documents - In microform only, IUP library has a selective collection of early British government documents including laws, statutes, the Parliamentary debates, public petitions and reports, British sessional papers, yearbooks and etc..covering the period of 1225 to 1918. 

Locating Government Documents

 

Generally, government documents can be found through a search of the PILOT, the library's online catalog and Marcive WebDocs, or Catalog of U.S. Government Publications. Government documents are housed at different locations in Stapleton Library based on types of materials.  

  • Printed materials - Federal and PA state government publications are shelved at government document section located to the rear of the first floor (view the first floor plan) arranged by SuDocs number (Superintendent of Documents Classification System) for Federal documents and by PA documents number (PA documents Classification scheme) for Pennsylvania government documents.

  • Maps - All maps are filed in map cases located outside the office of Government Documents on the first floor arranged by countries, regions and types.  For assistance of retrieving maps, ask government document librarian in room 110.  A  Guide to the Map Collection at Stapleton Library is available online.

  • Microform materials - Micro materials are filed in microform cabinets in Serials Department on the ground floor.  Serials Department staff can assist you in retrieving micro materials and using micro readers. A Guide to Government Documents in Microforms at Stapleton Library is available online. 

  • CD-ROMs and DVDs - CDs and DVDs are shelved at Media Circulation arranged by call number on the first floor.  The assistants there can help you retrieve the CDs or DVDs.

Services

  • Circulation of government materials - Most items that are cataloged and kept as permanent collection can be checked out at the library’s main Circulation Desk   Reference materials and items that are not cataloged may be borrowed with special permission from a librarian.  For circulation policies and overdue fines and fees, click here.

  • Interlibrary loan service - If a needed item is not available in our collection, Interlibrary Loan Service can obtain it for you.  Click here for information about interlibrary loan service.

  • Public terminals - Computers with internet access to government online publications are provided in the library.

Access for General Public

 

Chapter 19 of Title 44 of the U.S. Code guarantees “government publications available for the free use of the general public”.  IUP library posts no restriction for using the collection, but a fee will be charged for printing or photocopying documents. The photocopy machines in the library can only accept IUP issued I-card and photocopy card.  Non- IUP affiliates need to purchase a photocopy card from a card machine located on the ground floor.  The charge for the card is $ 5.00.
