Step 1 Identifying a Region/Country and Topic

  • e.g. Caribbean as a region or Dominica as a country

  •  e.g. textiles and apparel or clothing industry as a topic

Step 2Finding Reference books

 

      The Reference books listed below provide information on country profiles and international trade and business.  They

       are shelved at Reference section on the first floor:

  •   World Factbook  [REF] G 122.U56a 2005

Prepared by CIA and updated every year, this book contains country information categorized by geography, people, government, economy, communication, transportation, military and transnational issues.  Country and regional maps are also included.  A list of international organizations and groups can be found at Appendix B (p. 624).

  •  Dictionary of International Business Terms  [REF] HD 62.4 .C36 2004

           This book contains more than 4,500 terms related to international business, trade and internet. Other information   

           provided by the book includes U.S. and Overseas Contacts for Major Foreign Markets (Appendix C 

           International Trade Commission Offices in foreign countries (Appendix D), International Business on WWW

           (Appendix J), and more.

  • World business directory  [REF] HF54.U5 W66                                                                                              This 4-volume book lists more than 100,000 companies in 190 countries.  Information for each company listed in this    book includes contact, officers’ names and titles, financial data, employee figures, company type, founded year, products traded, industry activity and more.  In volume 4, companies are organized in product index, industry index and alphabetic index.

  • Moody’s International Manual [REF] HG 4009 .M66

          Published in 4 volumes, this book provides reference source for financial and business information on

          approximately 11,100 major corporations, sovereigns and their municipalities, and national and supranational     

          institutions in 117 countries.  Information is arranged by country in alphabetical order.  Country information includes 

          people, government and economy.  Corporate information covers company history, description of business, and 

          property, financial statement, debt, capital and other key data.  

  • International Trade Statistics Yearbook  [REF] HF91 .U473

          This  has two-volume book offers information on trade, import and export arranged by country and by  commodity.

 

Step 3 - Find books using PILOT

  •  The  PILOT, online catalog of IUP Library, allows you to locate books in our collection.

     To search it:

    -         Go to the library web page at http://www.lib.iup.edu

    -         Mouse over “Books and More” and choose “Oniline Catalog” 

    -         Choose “Guided Search”  and, search by keywords. For example, if your region of the world includes the Caribbean, you might type in:  (apparel industry or clothing trade) and caribbean

         When you locate a book make sure it is available in Stapleton Library. Write down the call number. Ask at the   reference desk to see where the book is located or check the guides in the hallways.  

         Take the book to the circulation desk and check it out with your I-card.

 

Step 4 – Finding journal/magazine and newspaper articles

 

The library’s online Indexes & Databases provide bibliographic information, abstracts and full texts of journal/magazine and newspaper articles.   Listed below are three business databases IUP library subscribed:

  • Business Source Premier, covering management, economics, finance, accounting, international business and more.  To search this database:

-                go to the library web site at http://www.lib.iup.edu, mouse over “Articles and More” and choose “All Databases”,

-                select Business Source Premier” and search by topic/keywords. For example, if your region of the world includes Asia, you might type in: "textile and apparel" and asia

  • Business and Company Resource Center, providing detailed company and industry news and information.  To search this database: 

-                At “All Databases” page, select “Business and Company Resource Center, and search by either company, industry description or articles. 

-                Advanced search is also provided to get information about companies in a specific country. To do this: 

-                Select “Advanced Search”; at Content Area,

-                Select “Company/profiles/products”,

-                Enter “textile” in the first box and then select “Industry description” from the pull down menu, 

-                Enter “India” as a country name in the second box and select “State/country” from the pull down menu, then click on “Search”.

  • Lexis-Nexis / Academic Universe, containing business articles from newspapers, magazines/journals, company profiles, directories and more.   You can also find detailed information about specific countries. To search this database: 

-               At  the library’s web site:  http://www.lib.iup.edu;  mouse over “Articles and More” and select Lexis-Nexis / Academic Universe,

-                Select “Business” located on the left panel of Lexis-Nexis.

-                To search for country profiles, select “Reference” from a list on the left, then select “Country Profiles”.

 

Step 5 Finding Government Information

 

     Government publications contain wealth of information on business around the world.  To search government 

      publications, use:

 

  • MARCIVE WebDocs - a web-based Catalog of U.S. Government Publications covers the period of July 1976 to present.  To search the catalog:

-          At the library website http://www.lib.iup.edu, click on “Articles and More…” and then “All databases”.

-          At “Indexes & Databases” screen http://www.lib.iup.edu/databases/databases.shtm#m, select “MARCIVE WebDocs http://www.marcive.com/webdocs/webdocs.dll

-          At MARCIVE, select “subject” for the search and enter the subject terms, for example “textile industry-asia”. 

 

  • FirstGov – It is the official government gateway to information on wide variety of subjects by government agency/department, level of government and by topic.  To search this website:

-          At the search field located on the top right corner of the web site, select “Advanced Search”.

-          Enter, for example, “textile industry” in the first box; 

-          Enter “Asia” or “India” in the second box and click on “Search”.

 

  • Google Uncle Sam -  It searches only government and military sites.  To search this site:

-          At the search field, enter a topic, e.g. textile and asia.

Note:  Advanced Search is not working for Google Uncle Sam.  It leads you to regular Google’s advanced search.

     Listed here are different citation styles.  The current printed editions are kept at Reference Desk.
