Founded in 1883, the Detroit Institute of Arts is one of the finest art museums in the United States and is well-known for its fine holdings in American art of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

This exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery uses portrait drawings dating from the 1880s to the 1980s to show the ways in which the art of portraiture has been changed by trends in 20th century art.

Founded in 1997 by artists Marc Garrett and Ruth Catlow, Furtherfield is "an online platform for the creation, promotion, criticism, and archiving of adventurous digital / net art work for public viewing, experience, and interaction."

Organized in the US by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the National Gallery of Art, this exhibition brought together for the first time over 70 portrait sculptures by Jean-Antoine Houdon, probably the greatest portrait sculptor of the 18th century. The Web version of the exhibition presents two sculptures that can be rotated and viewed in the round (portrait of Marie-Sébastien-Charles-François Fontaine de Biré, treasurer general under Louis XVI and Le Baiser donné, or The Kiss Given -- privately owned and loaned for the exhibition).

The Smith show features a virtual light table of images that can be arranged dynamically by Themes -- early screen prints, anatomy, self-portraits, nature, feminine contexts -- or Mediums.

Designed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to complement their exhibit featuring the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci, this site will be an excellent resource for educators and students hoping to view the drawings of one of the world's most acclaimed artists.

A highlight of the site is certainly the online exhibit dedicated to the ground breaking work of long-time Milwaukee industrial designer Brooks Stevens. Here, visitors can view detailed images of some of his most famous designs, which include the Miller Brewing logo, the Evinrude outboard motor, and the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile.

Master of many mediums, James McNeill Whistler is the focus of this fine interactive gallery and multimedia web presentation, sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, and designed in conjunction with an ongoing exhibit at the Freer Gallery.
