Retrospective Purchasing

Selection criteria.  In these tight economic times, Bibliographers and Liaisons must be highly selective in choosing retrospective materials and resources for the Libraries.  Some criteria are:

1)       Relevance to the curriculum and appropriateness to the Libraries’ mission

2)       Timeliness and lasting value of the content

3)       Strength of present holdings in the subject area

4)       Demand

5)       Cost

6)       Desirability of format – electronic format is desirable

7)       Reputation or authoritativeness of author, publisher, compiler, or producer

As a general rule, not more than 10% of a departmental allocation should be spent on retrospective purchase.
